Those who eagerly awaited the landing of Curiosity on the RedPlanet are as well equally happy for Michael Phelps’ enormous achievement atthe Games. Okay, apart from the latter news, NASA’s Curiosity is in the headlinesfor the successful finishing of the entire line-up. The crane-sized rover, Curiosity, arrived on Mars and apparently reached out to accomplish the core task in space exploration – to establish if live existed ever on the planet.

At 91, the science fiction extraordinaire left a body of work that might fulfill the augury of that showman in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1932. President Barack Obama paid a heartily tribute to the memory of sci-fi supremo Ray Bradbury, soon after the news of the veteran's death surfaced. Sci-fi news website Io9 was the first one to break the news of Ray Bradbury's death in southern California.

Matt Damon is in Vancouver filming the science fiction thriller Elysium alongside Jodie Foster and Alice Braga. The crew wrapped up the third day on location Friday in Kerrisdale at Macdonald Street and Marine Drive where, although Damon and the crew took off at 8 p.m. Thursday, paparazzi were reported to have remained in the bushes with night vision cameras until midnight.

Last week we had the intense sequences of western and sci-fi action and violence, some partial nudity and a brief crude reference Cowboys and Aliens opened and is well received and this week we also have 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' that comes with the back story of what happened while he and his fellow astronauts were lost in space? How did monkeys rise and people lose their place at the top of the food chain? That’s exactly where the smart, exciting Rise of the Planet of the Apes fits in to the series. Remains to be seen, how it does in next week report.

Last week, ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ debuted and took in $100 million for the weekend. It’s total domestic take now stands at $180.6 million with a worldwide box office of $418 million. Retro-science fiction film ‘Super 8′ dropped just one place to fifth taking in an additional $7.4 million to bring its domestic total to $110 million and its worldwide total to $155 million. Warner Bros./DC Comics’ ‘Green Lantern’ fell to seventh place taking in $6.5 million. It’s worldwide box office now sits at just $136.9 million.

The first box office numbers for Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon are in and seem to be OK. The third installment earned $5.5 million at the 9pm Tuesday night screenings in 2,700 3D theaters and added more 2D screens at midnight to take in $8 million at that time for a total of $13.5 million so far.

I am  planning to see it this weekend in 3D if I can, even though the critics did not liked it, but audiences across the world seems to have been flocking to see Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. With this year box office being fairly depressed so far, the Pirates of the Caribbean 4 has topped them all so far this year with handsome 90 millions USD. Not as good as the last two, but good enough. The overseas taking is also proving to be very good.

Marvel/Disney’s ‘Thor’ easily held onto the top spot in theaters this past weekend and stayed atop the box office this weekend, taking in $34.5m in its weekend with a 47.5% dropbringing its total domestic box office to $119 million in just two weeks. Currently its worldwide box office gross has reached $344 million. ‘Thor’ most likely won’t reach the box office heights of fellow Marvel heroes ‘Spider-Man 3 ($890 million) or Iron Man 2 ($622 million), but will certainly pass ‘Fantastic Four’s $330 million gross.

Animated family-oriented movies are in complete control of box office taking this year, posting the 3 biggest weekend openings of the year including the latest, RIO, with garnered the highest opening of the year with $40M in the first three days of release. The 2nd biggest opening of the year was $38M for RANGO, with HOP rounding out the top 3 with a $37M opening just a couple of weeks ago. RIO actually opened a week ago internationally and has already made over $165M around the world.
