The producers Alcon Entertainment have announced the film will be a prequel or sequel, rather than a remake of the Philip K Dick adaptation. British director Sir Ridley Scott is to make a new instalment of his 1982 cult sci-fi Blade Runner based on the novel with wonderful title "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

The cult classic Set in Los Angeles in 2019, with its vision of a dystopian future was influential on many later films "It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction," producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said in a statement.

The original cult classic ‘Blade Runner’ has become an icon in the sci-fi film world and is considered a beloved classic. Based on the Philip K Dick novel, ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’,  The film starred Harrison Ford as Richard Deckard, a burnt-out “Blade Runner” whose job is to track down and destroy rogue superhuman robots called replicants. His life becomes more complicated when he finds himself falling in love with one and struggles to keep her from being destroyed. (There’s a twist to Deckard’s character that I won’t reveal that left you thinking.)

‘Blade Runner’ celebrated its 25th anniversary back in 2007 in which Warner Bros digitally re-mastered and re-released the classic movie in DVD and Blu-ray and later was released on many satelite and cable movie channels around the world.  This new ‘Blade Runner’ project is still in pre-production and there is no script yet, so it may be some time before anything is seen from Scott. But, none the less, the news is exciting and a long time coming for many fans of ‘Blade Runner’.

However, the producers have said we have to wait a while - filming could begin in 2013 at the earliest, with the movie not in cinemas until at least 2014. They also added with no hint has been given about casting yet, that it was unlikely Ford would return in his role as Rick Deckard.

"This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."
